The Road Trip in detail

Why not take a trip to northern Scandinavia with your fifthwheel or Motorhome?

Winter camping is particularly well-suited to Scandinavian countries. Therefore, there are no problems with services. Likewise, the road network is well-maintained despite constant snowfall, and snow removal services are ready to go as soon as the first snow falls.

In the "far north," winters are rather cold and dry, and daylight gradually returns to us around the beginning of February. This is also the time to fully enjoy the Northern Lights as they begin to dance across the starry sky.

If this extraordinary adventure tempts you, don't hesitate to join me.

Day 6

Today's stage takes us through a picturesque landscape with numerous lakes, forests, and hills to our destination, Falun. Along the way, we'll have the opportunity to visit Sweden's oldest town, Sigtuna, founded in 980. In Avista, we'll see the largest Dala horse, an iconic symbol of Sweden.

Falun Mine

Day 7

In the morning, we visit the famous Falun Mine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Copper was mined here a thousand years ago, and for a long time, two-thirds of all copper in the world was extracted here. This is where the red paint used to paint Swedish houses comes from. In the 18th century, Falun red was discovered, which is actually a waste product of copper mining.

In the afternoon, we will hit the road again to Sveg, where the world's largest wooden bear welcomes us.

Swedish mounting

Day 8 - 9

We drive through the beautiful Jämtland countryside, passing through small villages and valleys, to Are, known for its cross-country and downhill ski resort, but also for many other activities, such as dog sledding or enjoying the beautiful snowy landscapes on a snowmobile. We will also visit Sweden's largest waterfall, Tannforsen.

Meeting with reindeer

Day 10

Today's route takes us through snowy landscapes where we might encounter a herd of reindeer. Along the way, we can also stop at the Hoting Automobile Museum, for lovers of vintage cars. Today's stop will be Sorsele.

storforsen

Day 11-12

We are in the land of the Sami people and will be crossing the Arctic Circle for the first time. On our way, we can visit the Stoforsens Falls, which are among the most voluminous rapids in Europe. We will arrive in Jokkmokk and attend the Sami Festival. On this occasion, a large winter market will be held with music, dancing, crafts, and culinary specialties. Sami people from all four countries gather here, everything is dedicated to their tradition.

Santa's House

Day 13

Today's destination, after a tour of the small church village of Gammelstad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, is Rovaniemi, Santa Claus Village. With its friendly man in red as its symbol, Santa Claus Village is definitely worth a visit. You could also write a postcard, which will then be stamped by Santa himself at his own post office. We'll also cross the Arctic Circle.

Alta Ice Hotel

Day 14 - 15

After our visit to Santa Claus, we continue our drive north through breathtaking scenery to Kiruna. For a long time, Kiruna was the largest city in the world - but only in terms of land area.

We will have the opportunity to visit the Ice Hotel, one of Kiruna's most famous attractions. It is rebuilt every year from ice and snow.

We will also be able to enjoy a dog sled ride and it will also be possible to visit the largest iron ore mine in the world. After decades of mining, the town is crumbling and must be relocated in the coming years.

Here there are also good opportunities to see the Northern Lights.

Alta Cathedral

Day 16 - 17

Further north, we reach Alta in Norway, which is the largest city in Finnmark. Alta has a lot to offer: the Nordlyskatedrals, where we can learn more about the Northern Lights. The Salmon Museum, which will extol all the benefits of salmon!! The open-air archaeological museum known for its 6,000-year-old rock carvings and UNESCO World Heritage Site. We can also go snowmobiling. It is also one of the best places to observe the Northern Lights.

We will also have the opportunity to enjoy a pleasant evening in a typical Sami restaurant.

Nordkapp

Day 18

Today we will take the road to reach the northernmost point of Europe, the North Cape, where you will have spectacular views of the Arctic Sea. The ascent to the North Cape will probably be the most adventurous part of this trip and will depend on many weather factors. If the weather permits, we will stay on the North Cape plateau for our bivouac; if not, we will be forced to descend to a safer point for the night.

Northern Lights

Day 19

From today on, our motto is once again "heading south." We'll leave the North Cape and head towards Svensby, passing through the Lyngen Fjord with its impressive mountains and glaciers. From our campsite overlooking the fjord, we'll enjoy an exceptional spot to see the Northern Lights.

Snowmobile tour

Day 20 - 21

From Svensby, a short drive awaits us before reaching Tromso, the largest city in the world north of the Arctic Circle. We will visit the Arctic Cathedral, one of Norway's most famous churches. During our visit to Tromso, we will be able to appreciate the city's winter flair. We will also have the opportunity to visit the Polar Museum, dedicated to the history of Arctic exploitation. A cable car will take us to the top of a mountain from which we can enjoy a panoramic view.

Ferry

Day 22

From now on, we will explore Norway's most beautiful scenic roads. We will depart from Tromso and join the ferry at Brensholmen to travel to the island of Senja.

On the scenic drive to Senja, the rugged mountains plunging directly into the ocean are a breathtaking sight. We can also take a short detour to the fishing villages of Husoy, Bovaer, and Mefjordvaer. The end of today's stage is on the island of Dyroya at the campsite.

Lofoten

Day 23

Heading to the Lofoten Islands. Our route will take us from our campsite on the island of Dyroya to Laukvika, a small seaside fishing village in the Lofoten Islands. From there, we'll have the chance to spot the Northern Lights, weather permitting.

Northern Lights

Day 24 - 25

We continue our journey along one of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world. We will have the opportunity to see all the small emblematic villages of Lofoten such as Kabelvaeg, Henningsvaeg with its soccer field placed on an island, Unnstad for surfing enthusiasts or Reine.

Day 26 -27 - 28

An early ferry crossing from Moskenes to Bodo awaits us. Once in Bodo, we head towards the world's strongest tidal current, the Salstraumen.

We will take the scenic coastal road Fv17, also known as Kystrisveien, driving close to the Atlantic Ocean and using a total of six ferries between islands and through fjords to reach Holm. On this part of the journey, we will cross the Arctic Circle for the last time.

Trondheim

Day 29

With today's stage, we reach the third largest city in Norway, Trondheim, known for its cathedral and its streets of colorful houses.

Blue Mountain

Day 30 - 31

Heading towards Oslo, we'll take a short detour and follow the scenic Rondane Road along the Blue Mountains. 2,000-meter peaks in a unique landscape adorned with blinding white snow, and the low sun reflecting off the snow, give us a sense of tranquility.

Oslo Sauna

Day 32

Upon arriving in Oslo, we'll visit the interactive Viking Museum and then take a city tour. There will also be time to say goodbye at a farewell dinner, where I'm sure we'll reminisce about the best adventures of our winter trip to the "far north."

Please note that I deliberately do not specify any fixed daily step descriptions for this special tour.

Due to weather-related factors, it is possible that deviations from the planned route and possibly even extensions of a few days may occur. A possible change of route should always be planned for.

We sometimes spend the night without infrastructure and due to the sometimes very narrow roads, this trip also requires a cautious driving style only because of the often slippery road surface and the crossing of reindeer and moose.
